Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about residential electrical work in Queensland.

Can I do my own electrical wiring in Queensland?
No. All electrical wiring work in Queensland must be carried out by a licensed electrical contractor or licensed electrician. This includes installing power points, light fittings, switchboards, and any work inside the walls or ceiling. Unlicensed electrical work is illegal under the Queensland Electrical Safety Act 2002 and can void your home insurance. Permitted electrical work (such as replacing a light globe or a plug-in appliance) does not require a licence.
What is a safety switch and do I need one?
A safety switch (RCD, or Residual Current Device) detects current leakage and turns off the circuit within milliseconds to reduce the risk of serious electric shock. Queensland legal obligations depend on the property and the work: new homes have required safety switches on power point circuits since 1992, and on power point and lighting circuits since 2000. Property transfer and rental rules focus on approved safety switches for power point circuits. For better protection, the Queensland Electrical Safety Office recommends considering safety switches on all circuits, including lights, air conditioning, stove, hot water, and pool equipment. Test safety switches every three months using the test button on the switchboard.
Can you handle electrical work for renovations or new homes?
Yes. We handle wiring, switchboards, lighting, power points, safety switches, smoke alarms, and final testing for renovations, upgrades, and new homes. If other trades are involved, we coordinate with them when needed while keeping the homeowner outcome front and centre.
How many power points should I allow for?
Australian Standard AS/NZS 3000 specifies minimum requirements, but modern homes usually need more than the minimum. As a guide, kitchens often need 4-6 double power points, living areas 4-6, bedrooms 2-4 each, and garages at least 2. We talk through how you use each room so the layout feels practical after you move in.
Do you install solar systems?
We do not install solar panels or inverters, but we can allow for future solar and battery storage during electrical planning so a dedicated solar installer has a cleaner path later.
What licences do you hold?
Chillin Air & Electrical holds Electrical Contractors Licence 88860 and QBCC Licence 15025062. All electrical work is carried out by licensed electricians to AS/NZS 3000:2018 (the Australian/New Zealand Wiring Rules) and complies with the Queensland Electrical Safety Act 2002 and the Electrical Safety Regulation 2013.
How long does residential electrical work take?
Small upgrades can often be completed in a single visit. Larger wiring, switchboard, lighting, or new-home work depends on access, scope, and scheduling. We explain the likely timing before work starts and keep you updated if anything changes.
